Dental Admissions Test (DAT) Practice Exam - Study Guide & Prep

The primary purpose of using a dental scaler is to remove plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth. Dental scalers are specially designed instruments that effectively clean teeth by scraping off the buildup of these substances, which can lead to gum disease and cavities if not removed. Proper dental hygiene, including the removal of plaque and tartar, is essential in preventing periodontal diseases, making the scaler a critical tool in both routine and preventive dentistry.

While other choices present common dental procedures, they do not align with the specific function of a scaler. Filling cavities pertains to restorative dental procedures, straightening teeth involves orthodontics, and diagnosing gum disease relies on clinical examination and patient history, rather than the physical removal of plaque. Therefore, the focus of scalers on maintaining dental health through cleaning is what makes their main purpose distinct and essential.
